Early Online Sportsbook 2019/2020 NBA Futures
The Los Angeles Lakers added Lebron James as a free agent ahead of this past season and they moved way up the futures list to win this year’s league title. The reality that even the best player in the league cannot carry a very average team all the way to a championship set in. The Lakers ended the regular season at 37-45.
Los Angeles opened at +2000 betting odds to win the title next season ahead of a trade with New Orleans to add Anthony Davis to the starting five. Most of the books quickly reacted to the public money coming in by making the Lakers the favorite to win it all at +250 to +350 betting odds. This move also boosted their projected win total to 54 for next season. While LA may win that many games, betting against it winning a NBA title still offers value no matter how high the risk.
The Golden State Warriors were the Gold Standard in the NBA the past five seasons. Severe injuries to two of their best players ended any aspirations of winning a third-straight NBA Championship this year. Both Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson are going to be rehabbing those major injuries for most of next season to squeeze any value out of the Warriors’ odds. Golden State is still listed anywhere from +650 up to +1000 odds to win next season’s championship, which offers another good chance to bet the field against those numbers.
Finding the Best Value in NBA Championship Futures
The other team in Los Angeles might just offer the best value on the board. The Clippers’ opening odds to win next season’s championship were +1800. Now that they are considered frontrunners in the race to land Kawhi Leonard as the biggest free agent on this year’s list, those odds have been bet down to as low as +800 with a few online bookies.
The Clippers were competitive last season at 48-34 and they gave Golden State all it could handle in the opening round of the playoffs. Adding Leonard to the roster could have the exact same effect it did when he was traded from San Antonio to Toronto ahead of this season. We all see how that move worked out. If you think that Leonard does take his talents to the West Coast to go head-to-head against LeBron and the Lakers, this would be an excellent hedge bet at this juncture.
The other value bet as a hedge is Toronto as the defending champion. There is always the chance that Kawhi will play at least one more season north of the border. That would add some tremendous value to the Raptors’ futures to repeat as champs. Their odds range from +600 up to +705. That is still a healthy return for the top team in the league right now.
The safest bet this early in the NBA offseason would probably be the Milwaukee Bucks anywhere from +605 to +700. They have the most stability in their current roster from a free agent basis while posting the best record in the NBA last year.
